Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a new procedure that causes weight loss by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten. With this procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 90 percent of the stomach so that the stomach takes the shape of a tube or "sleeve." Most patients can expect to lose 50 to 75 percent of their excess body weight over a 6-12 month period.

Advantages of sleeve gastrectomy:

  • Fewer food intolerances than with the gastric band
  • Weight loss generally is faster with the sleeve than with the gastric band
  • There is no implantable device
  • Weigh loss is similar to laparoscopic gastric bypass
  • No device that needs adjustment is inserted. The follow up regimen is not as intense as it would be with the band.

Disadvantages of sleeve gastrectomy

  • Since the sleeve is a newer procedure, it hasn't been tested as long as gastric banding or gastric bypass
  • Sleeve gastrectomy is non-adjustable and non-reversible
  • Complication risks are slightly higher than with the band

Risks/Complications

  • Standard risk associated with surgery
  • Leakage at the suture/staple site
  • Blood clots
